New York USA I have embroidery a Mac, I have a Bernina 635E, I have the embroidery module. Which software is compatible with my Apple/Mac desk top with Windows XP. I prefer not to buy a PC to run embroidery for my sewing machine. I dont want to spend a fortune on software. I want to be able to download designs from sites,Skill: Advanced Beginner and use photos that will be digitized automatically, not manually. I would use a USB that I bought from my Bernina dealer to download from the computer and plug in to my sewing machine. All and Any help is appreciated as I know next to nothing about this process. ------

Texas USA Hi Nancy BR,Skill: Expert/Couture I am also on a Mac (Book) and have a Bernina. I use Embird by running Virtual Box with XP. The only complaint I have is that even when in in the Windows partition, I cannot get my computer to connect to the machine. Not a big deal since I just copy designs to the USB stick. You should create a shared folder that you can access from both Mac and Windows--it makes life a lot easier. My husband uses Parallels and DOES NOT recommend it. He has had lots of problems, but hasn't wanted to go through the pain of switching to a VM. Good luck! Juliette ------

New York USA HI, Thanks for your message. Do you have an artista?Skill: Advanced Beginner If so, when you use Embird you dont need even the simple software from Bernina? You just use the basic Embird software? I looked at inexpensive laptops today when all is said and done its close to $500 I didn't know that the software for the embroidery machine would not run easily on my desk top. I dont think I would have gone ahead and bought it! It hard to believe they are not Mac compatible. Question is I bought a Bernina USB key. Should I use a generic one? What do you use and How much does the Virtual Box cost? The tech at Embird seemed to be saying that there are certain things you can not do when you have a Artista. Perhaps you can not use the photos from your Mac with the sfumoto plug in. which I would like to use sfumoto, it is really an interesting thing and would be great for a number of reasons, and one thing I would really like to use. If I can not do what would not want the Virtual Box I would go ahead and buy the laptop which I can use for other things, though I much prefer Apple products to PC. Is it like a box that you use a cord to connect to the computer? Do you then have to have anti virus protection like Norton anti virus, because now we are converting, as if a PC. Which get lots of viruses. Thanks for your help. ![]() ------

Quote: NancyBR Is it like a box that you use a cord to connect to the computer? 'Virtualbox' is just . a virtual box: It's no hardware connected to a computer, but a software that runs on Mac OS X and emulates a PC in a window on your Mac. As I mentioned in the other thread you opened in parallel: VirtualBox (and its competitors) is one of two possibilities to run Windows software on a Mac. From my point of view it makes absolutely no sense to purchase an additional PC: A lot of Mac users run Windows in a virtual environment, Parallels and VMware provide very mature products (although Juliette's husband had some bad experiences). And even if you are not confident in the 'virtual' approach: Use Apple's Boot Camp, which turns your Mac into a 'normal' PC, on which MS Windows can be installed on. I found a video on Apple's website, giving a short summary of both options, maybe you should look at it before making decisions. No matter how you decide: With running Windows either virtualized or in Boot Camp you will end with an additional OS to maintain: It'll need backups, virus protection, regular software / security updates etc. Matthias ------

Embroidery Software For Mac
New York USA I have done a lot of research about adding Boot Camp or Virtual Box. I have decided to buy an inexpensive laptop. The reasoning is it will be direct and simple. I dont have a laptop so it can come in handy for other things. Two by the time I buy Virtual box at $108. plus, windows 7 OS which is another 215. and anitvirus software, I think that is somewhere in the realm of 40 to 50. I have already spent 365.00Skill: Advanced Beginner I can get an hp or dell or toshiba laptop for under 400 which will do more then I need, with tax, anti virus and a second year warranty it rounds up to around five. As far as the software. I am just beginning embroidery, I will work with the Artlink 6 and down load a few designs and go from there. Embird is a real possibilty. I understand everything to have color correct and all has to be formated in ART for my machine. But EXP can work to according to some and would lack color, as it comes out wonky. But that isn't a problem as long as I know when the color seperations are. I saw my Bernina dealer today and she told me to wait until November, there will be big promo on software and an event on machine embroidery in her store. Very excited about that. So I am good for now. Thank you all for the help it really made a big difference. Im sure there will be more questions ahead! ------

But anyway: Depending on your budget an additional computer might be the easiest solution, as you can drop it off at your dealer without any problem: Many of them refuse to support Windows on Mac due to their inexperience . -- Edited on 4/3/11 8:19 AM -- ![]() ------

I appreciate this thread as I bought my first Mac (Book Pro) in March. If I decide to use Boot Camp, do you think I would still need backups, virus protection, and updates if I never get online when using Boot Camp? If I use it strictly to run my embroidery (digitizing) software? Thanks, Pam.

Pam,Interesting and important questions! I'm behaving much the same with my Windows installation (in Parallels): Most of the time it's not connected to the internet, only to update virus patterns and Windows. So the probability to catch a virus or trojan is much lower, but not completely gone. For that reason I've installed a free virus protection (link above), although it shows an ad from time to time. But with an always-offline PC and a natural mistrust in unknown sources of USB sticks, CDs etc. you should be fine. Backups are a completely different story: They don't protect you against male ware, only, but against bad written software, hardware defects, and human errors. Each of these might destroy your data (e. g. embroideries) and the Windows installation. While the second costs only time and efforts to reinstall, the first might be unrecoverable. I would NEVER spare a backup. External laptop drives are cheap, easy to use and reliable. Best purchase two of them, then use one at home to copy important data (keeping older versions), and swap it from time to time with the second, located off site (e. g. at a relative's home). So your data is protected against fire, theft, and even against a hardware failure during a restore. -- Edited on 4/3/11 12:59 PM -- ------

Thanks for the video link on the Virtual Box install. It looks very easy to do. I'm a little wary of putting anything windows on my Mac, but I would really like to be able to use my Janome Digitizer MB software on my Mac.
If I wanted to download embroidery designs, I should be able to download them to a PC (that currently has my digitizer on it), transfer the designs to a memory stick and then put them on my Mac - right? I won't be doing much of that, and it's a few extra steps, but would that work? Or could I download the designs to my Mac desktop using Safari, and then open them in digitizer (using VirtualBox)? These are probably dumb questions, but I'm still kind of new to all this. Thanks for the advice on getting external laptop drives - I never would have thought of that. Thanks again. Pam
